This page explains those parts, where leaks show, and who is allowed to do what under Queensland law. The work sits within the tap and toilet work we take across the suburb and the streets around it.

Inlet Valve, Outlet Valve and Float Explained

Three parts cause most cistern trouble: an inlet valve, an outlet valve or worn seals, and each one announces itself differently.

The inlet valve refills the cistern after you flush, then shuts off once the float reaches the level set for it. An inlet valve that is worn or gummed up leaves the cistern trickling or running without end.

The outlet valve, often called a drop valve, holds the water in until you press the button. When its rubber wears, water dribbles into the pan, so the cistern refills to make up what slipped through and the loo sounds like it never stops.

The float rides the water level and tells the inlet valve when to close. A float riding too low shuts the valve early and starves the flush.

A flush that comes out weak or half-hearted usually traces to a low water level, blocked rinse holes under the rim, or a sticking flush button. Our guide to why your toilet keeps running goes deeper on the running side.

Leaks at the Base, Cistern and Supply Line

Leaks show at three spots: the cistern itself, the base of the pan, or the supply connection, and each spot points to a different part.

Water pooling at a toilet's base usually traces to the pan connector, the angled pipe linking the pan to the floor drain, or to the rubber seal on it. Dampness in the gap between cistern and pan means the rubber joining those two has failed.

Dampness at the supply end often traces to the small stop tap feeding the cistern or to the braided hose connecting it. A sewer smell near the loo can mean the rubbers that seal the pan into its drain connection have hardened or shifted.

One home test settles a silent leak: drop food colouring into the cistern, leave the loo unflushed, and any colour showing in the bowl points to water escaping past the outlet valve. A flush afterwards rinses it away, because the dye leaves ceramic untouched.

Cistern Washers and the Licence Line

Queensland draws a line inside the cistern. The QBCC lists three parts as unregulated work: the washer inside the drop valve, the washer inside the float valve, and the suction cup rubber.

Anyone with the knowledge and skill for those three may swap them, as long as the result still complies with the standards. Everything else on a loo sits on the licensed side.

Every other toilet repair counts as minor work, which a QBCC licensee carries out with no permit needed and no Form 4 lodged. Tap washers sit on a similar footing, and our tap repairs page covers that side of the fixture work.

Rentals add a deadline. A broken or blocked loo sits on the Queensland emergency repair list that applies to rentals, and the owner or manager is required to keep a rental maintained. The tenant reports faults promptly.

When a Cracked Toilet Is Past Repair

What you pay hinges on which part has failed, whether the porcelain has cracked, and how easily we reach the cistern and its isolation tap. You receive a fixed quote before any work starts, once the plumber has inspected the job.

Cracked porcelain is the point where repair gives way to replacement. A replacement suite needs WaterMark certification plus registration under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme before a licensed plumber may legally install it.

A loo on its third valve in two years can cost less over time to replace than to keep patching, and we will say so at the quote. If the basin taps are tired at the same time, our tap replacement page sets out the options.

Older Loos Near the Bowls Club

The cottage stock near the bowls club boundary holds plenty of original bathrooms. Gaythorne Bowls Club has stood on the west side of Prospect Road since 1938, and the older cottages around it still carry cistern fittings from eras when the parts were simpler and heavier.

Rentals keep the phone busy too. Gallipoli Barracks sits next door, tenants move often where renting outnumbers owning at the last census, and end-of-lease lists regularly include a cistern that runs or a seal that weeps.

Toilet Questions From Gaythorne Locals

Call (07) 3523 7172

Why is my toilet cistern not filling up?

Three faults usually stop a cistern filling: an inlet valve past its best, a float riding too low, or the wall tap not opened fully. We check each in order once the lid is off.

What makes a toilet keep running after a flush?

The usual culprit is a worn outlet washer. Water slips past it into the pan, and the inlet valve keeps refilling to make up what escaped. An inlet valve that will not shut off does the same.

Why won't my toilet flush properly?

A flush that comes out weak usually traces to a low water level in the cistern, blocked rinse holes under the rim, or a sticking flush button. Each has a different fix, and we diagnose it with the lid off.

Should I repair or replace an old toilet?

Repair is worth it while the china is intact and a single valve or seal has worn. A cracked pan or cistern, or a Gaythorne loo needing repair after repair, points to replacement as the lower-cost path over time.

Does Urban Utilities cover a leaking cistern?

No, Urban Utilities' concealed leak adjustment excludes water lost through a leaking cistern, so that loss sits with the owner. Fixing the cistern quickly is the surest way to stop the bill climbing.
